Esports NG Clinches victory at ICAN and Bank of Industry Hackathon

From a competition of 400 brands to ten, eight, and finally the top three, Esports NG was able to scale through and win a prize money of One million naira.

The Hackathon Challenge tagged iHack4SDG Challenge 2023 was hosted by ICAN BOI Innovation Tech Hub, in collaboration with the Bank of Industry, ICAN, and Vatebra Tech Hub. The iHack4SDG challenge is a global one focused on gathering quality innovative business designers, developers, entrepreneurs, and innovators from the tech industry to present ingenious ideas on how to solve some of the most important Sustainable Development Goals.

The challenge started with about 400 teams/individuals and after a series of tasks, they were reduced to the top 10. The top 10 teams were provided with materials, and mentors who coached them through the process, impacting them with knowledge and the right skills to pitch their ideas in front of notable judges on the day scheduled for the final act which will produce the top three winners.

Each proposed idea was to focus on innovative solutions for 10 out of the fifteen SDGs including no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, and gender equality, among others and the top ideas will be moved into the ICAN-BOI Incubation program. 

The challenge provided winners with cash prizes; 1.5 million naira for the first prize, one million for the second, and seven hundred and fifty thousand naira for the third prize, the winners of the challenge will also be provided with access to a unique platform of innovators, build a networking potential and working space to brainstorm ideas.

The judges for the challenge were Udoh Usembo, who works as a Tech Ecosystem and Venture Sourcing Officer at First City Monument Bank, Gerald Okonkwo, popularly known as Gerald Black, a highly accomplished professional in entrepreneurship and business development, Ruth Iselema, founder and owner of Bitmama, a pan-African blockchain company available in Africa, Europe, and the US, and Henry Ogbuagu, one of the founding members and partner of Vencapital, a VC accelerator that focuses on providing placements and career prospects for underrepresented individuals in the venture capital industry.

Esports NG came second in the challenge after providing a satisfactory pitch and tech idea on the day of the physical pitch and was awarded the sum of one million naira. The grant presented will help the company to start up and sponsor its basic needs.
