THE COMMONWEALTH ESPORTS CHAMPIONSHIP 2022: The Lagos esports forum announces Nigeria’s participation.

Esports in Nigeria haven’t been at Its best compared to countries in Asia and the West. However, steps are seen to be taken consistently towards the advancement of esports in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. One of such steps is the participation of the Nigerian esports industry at the Commonwealth esports championship 2022, taking place live at Birmingham as announced by the Lagos esports forum on the 6th and 7th of August, 2022.

The Lagos esports forum is focused on educating and engaging Nigerians and Africans at large on the intricacies of esports, promoting the esports industry in this part of the world by organizing monthly webinars to discuss various topics in the esports space and providing empowerment for gamers in sub-Saharan Africa. The LESF took to their Instagram page to give the official announcement on the key things to know about Nigeria’s participation in the Commonwealth esports championship.

Commonwealth esports championship

The Commonwealth esports championship will be held together with and is considered as a guide to the Commonwealth Games, set to hold in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8. 

As announced by the Global Esports Federation and The Commonwealth Games Federation, Katie Sadleir, CEO of the CGF announced the three major titles for the championship featuring two categories; An open category and a women’s only category. The titles will include Dota 2, the eFootball series by Konami, and Rocket League.

The CEO of the Lagos esports forum and Secretary-General of the Africa Esports Development Federation (AEDF) stated that with less than a hundred days to the groundbreaking tournament, Nigeria will be one of the Six African countries scheduled to take part in the inaugural edition of the innovative move set to cut across esports in Commonwealth member countries.

Furthermore, Ife Akintaju (Team manager) revealed that Nigeria’s representatives (Team LESF) will take part in only one game title, football (console) in the Open and Female categories with the National qualifiers coming up on the 21st of May 2022 and the two emerging winners in both categories proceeding to Birmingham from August 6 – 7, 2022.
